How to Sell by Not Selling #417

How to Sell by Not Selling #417

Just this week  I’m completing an industry business survey and one respondent had a troubling answer when asked about business challenges. They said I have to be a shark instead of an honest businessman”  Wow that hurts! So let me ask you , Deep down inside, when you think about sales, is that how you see it?  Do you think you need to be a fast talking shark to be a top sales guy or gal?   It’s not. In fact, the best way to sell,  is to sell by not selling. That’s our topic in this week’s episode.

Today’s Chapter: Selling By Not Selling

When the Master sells, prospects are hardly aware of it,
To them it’s just a conversation about their lives.

Next best is a seller who is loved.
Next, is one who is feared as sleazy.
The worst is one who is considered a huckster.

If you don’t trust the customer, you make them untrustworthy.

The Master Seller doesn’t talk, they act.
When the sale is closed the people say, “We chose wisely”

Today’s Story

Chris was excited to start a new sales position promoting services that could save clients significant time while maintaining quality. Chris’s sales manager, Pat, took Chris out on their very first sales call. Chris was shocked at what happened.

At the sales call Pat never showed the PowerPoint that they had worked on all week. When they arrived Pat commented on one of their marketing posters on the wall, it was  a new product and the prospects were quick to start talking about it. Then the conversation wound around trends in the industry, the customer’s yearly goals, challenges with supply chains which led to the services Pat and Chris came to talk about. Before Chris knew it, the prospects requested a quote for a 3 year contract!

“How did you do that?” Asked Chris. “We never even showed them the slide deck. All you did was talk to them! ”

“Not exactly” said Pat, “If you noticed, what I really did was just ask a few targeted questions and let them tell us what they want and what they need. When I saw they had that one quality issue, I merely mentioned our solution and bingo, they got excited. My goal is always to have the buyer know they chose wisely, and of their own accord. That’s what I call master selling.”

Take Action Quote

There is a German proverb that goes Ein Krämer, der Mäusekot Nicht für Pfeffer ausgeben kann, hat sein Handwerk nicht gelernt.” Or translated: A huckster who cannot pass off mouse-turd for pepper, has not learned his trade.

Time and again I meet people who think this is what sales is all about, tricking people into buying your crap. This isn’t the case at all.

Trust your customers know their business and if you listen you will know if you can help. There is no need to arm twist or be unethical. Your goal to to make sure the buyers will say they chose wisely, and provide a strong reference and even referrals when the deal is done.

Owning Up to Mistakes #416

Prickly Cactus

Owning Up to Mistakes #416

Prickly Cactus Do you like being right and hate being wrong or being called out for making a mistake for goofing up? And let me add to that, have you ever had to apologize for your mistake or worse yet your companies mistake? Unfortunately once in a while this situation pops up and it’s extremely uncomfortable for the sales professional. Which is why it’s our topic for today. Advice on what to do when you’ve done wrong.

Today’s Chapter: Owning Up To Mistakes

A Master Seller knows they are not perfect.
When they make a mistake, they realize it.
Having realized it, they own up to it.
Having owned up to it, they correct it.
They consider clients who point out their faults as their teachers.

They think of their competition,
as being as perfect and flawed as themselves.

Today’s Story

Chris goofed and Chris knew it. Lee asked Chris for two simple requests but they fell between the cracks and now Chris was scrambling. This lack of attention was noticed by Lee and no doubt they were considering yanking the contract. What was Chris to do?

Chris asked Pat “I know I screwed up but it’s not all my fault. Lee never returned the report they promised to send and I asked Customer Experience for the update, but they never got back to me and now we’re in this predicament! This could permanently damage our relationship. How can I fix it?”

Pat nodded and then framed the situation. “We’re only human, people make mistakes and when they happen it’s best to come clean and own it. I get that it’s not all your fault, but we salespeople are the face of the company. If you’re going to be successful is sales you will need to get used to apologizing for mistakes you never made.

“Tell them it’s all our fault, even if it’s not. Tell them we should have done better and then ask what we can do to make this right. Own it completely. When you do that you might find that Lee will be very generous and forgive us. What they mostly want is to be heard.

“Again own it and ask what it will take to make this right. And then do it!

Take Action Quote

Ben Franklin wisely said “never ruin an apology with an excuse”.  I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to humble myself before a client due to a mistake I made or more often my company made. But I never shared an excuse, even if I had a good one. 9 out of 10 times, the client was totally OK with a quick resolution if I TOTALLY OWNED the mistake. In fact, often they would step up and take part ownership of the issue.

The best way to deal with the situation was just call it for what it is and make things right. Take ownership of the mistake, fix it and then move on. It’s the thing professional sales people do.

How to Find Qualified Leads #415

How to Find Qualified Leads #415

Do you ever find yourself calling the same leads over and over and not making any headway. This is a case of being lead poor and it’s time to up your prospecting and discover some bonified and  highly qualified leads. In this weeks episodes we investigate those situations, what you can do to fix it and how to find qualified leads

Today’s Chapter: How to Find Qualified Leads

The great Marketplace flows everywhere.
All business is born from it.
Though it doesn’t consciously create new markets
It pours itself into its work.

It makes no claim this business is good or bad
Yet it nourishes emerging markets
And doesn’t hold onto them.

Some grow and some vanish,
Yet all are contained within it.

The Master Seller is aware of its greatness.
Never “lead poor” they find leads like shells on a shore.
Daily they walk the beach to uncover new business
And Delight in new opportunities

Today’s Story

Towards the end of the week Chris was frustrated with the lack of progress being made on the new product. Good at follow up, all the prospects in the sales funnel were being attended to, but none of the leads were interested in setting up a sales call.

“Are you following up?” asked Pat. “Absolutely” said Chris, “Some of the leads had been emailed or called 20 times!” Hmm thought Pat.

“You know what the problem is? You’re lead poor! I love how you’re grinding, but the leads you have stink, they’re not interested. On top of that, you have too few of them, we need to up our prospecting.”

Pat went on … “Identifying good high quality leads comes back to understanding our ideal client and making sure that your emails and voicemails are targeting their needs and desires. Today let’s take a pause on follow up  and relook at your marketing campaigns. Given all the market changes this year I bet if we review your emails, and voicemails in the context of the persona of our ideal client we can uncover a bunch of high quality leads. We’re going to turn around!

Take Action Quote

Seth Godin once said, that in a crowded marketplace, fitting in is a failure. In a busy marketplace, not standing out is the same as being invisible. Too often sellers don’t understand the benefits of what they sell and who exactly should they sell too. On top of that they get shy and fear reaching out. But this is the thing,  Businesses are constantly in a state of flux and constantly looking to fix their problems and attain their aspirations. If you know exactly who you help and why, you will have as many high quality leads as there

How To Advance the Sale #414

Advance Button

How To Advance the Sale #414

Advance Button

Have you ever been on a sales call and after you hang up  it seems like the deal is going excruciatingly slow? Like a glacier melt? Well…. you’re not the only one which is why on today’s episode I address why deals don’t move faster by better understanding the sales process, the buying process and the strategy of what it means to advance the sale with the aim to close someday, but not today.

Today’s Chapter: Advance the Sale

Questions leads to sharing
Sharing leads to appointment
Appointment leads to possibility
Possibility leads to belief
Belief leads to a quote
Quote leads to purchase.

The largest of sales begin with a response to the smallest of acts.
This is called advancing the sale.

Today’s Story

Pat and Chris left the sales call and walked out to the parking lot. They chatted about the weather and what a nice day it turned out to be. When they got to the car, they were out of earshot from the office. It was then when Pat spoke, “So how do you think it went?”  “I don’t know” responded Chris, “they seemed interested, but guarded. I was hoping they would agree to buy but it was clear, they weren’t ready.”

“I agree” said Pat “ but we did advance the sale. I like that they asked about some of our existing clients and they were particularly focused on our new features. We’ve got our homework to do but we’re still in the game.”

“You don’t think they’re just too nice to say they don’t want to buy?” asked Chris”  “Not all” said Pat “ What I’ve found is the more we meet the higher the likelihood they will buy. Today we’ve advanced the sale and that’s a good day of work.

Take Action Quote

This reminds me of the quote from Frederick Douglas, the former slave and abolitionist who said “If there is no struggle, there is no progress”.   We’re sales professionals. We’re, not order takers. If buying your product was easy you would only need to put a order form on your website and watch the sales roll in.   But that doesn’t work for expensive and complex products and services. That’s not what we do. There is a process to buying and if you quit the process you will quit the result. Count it a win if you can advance the sale. When you do, you’ve done your job.

How to Control a Sale, By Not Controlling It #413

How to Control a Sale, By Not Controlling It #413

Are you obsessed with having things your way, are you frustrated when deals seem out of control, and nothing goes the way you planned. If so, today’s chapter of the Tao Te Ching of Sales may provide a bit of relief for your suffering when managing a pipeline feels more like herding cats. Let’s babble about how to control a sale, by not controlling it.

Today’s Chapter: Controlling the Sale

Crooked with words
the sale goes sideways.
Rushing the close
the deal comes to a halt.
Showing off and preening
Shows little.
Clinging to a few leads
Chases business away.

Hard rules on handling, manipulating, and fooling the buyer
never acknowledges what truly rules.

By not controlling the sale, the sale is controlled.
Each deal has its own course
Just do your job , then let go.

Today’s Story

Chris was a self admitted control freak, trying to control every aspect of every buyer as well as the entire sales funnel. Commendable yes! But exhausting and surprisingly not as successful as expected. Despite worry and guessing what could go wrong, the deals never progressed as planned. Buyers would change direction in a moment’s notice. They would make requests from out of the blue, and nothing Chris could do would prepare for the unforeseen.

During a one-on-one, Pat walked through the pipeline with Chris. In frustration Chris opened up and shared how chaotic the deals felt and how difficult it was to control the sale.

Pat laughed from personal experience knowing that the tighter you squeeze a slippery fish, the faster it slips out and back in the water. Pat said…

“Expect change, it’s the one constant in the world. Customers are never going to go the path we expect. What we should expect is the unexpected. They don’t all act alike. They don’t all have the same pains and aspirations. The best way to control a sale, is to not control it. Let each deal take its own course. Let the buyers reveal their wants and needs at their own pace and address them one by one, as they come.”

Take Action Quote

In 2013 I visited the ancient city of Ephesus in Turkey. It’s now a ruins and tourist destination excavated by archeologists Once upon a time it was a a thriving Persian sea town Between the 4th and 5th centuries BCE, there lived the Greek Philosopher named Heraclitus who loved paradox and wordplay, not unlike Lao Tze and his Tao Te Ching. Heraclitus, believed in the unity of opposites and harmony in the world. He is quoted as saying “No man ever steps in the same river twice” Why? because a river is always flowing, always moving, always changing and it’s never exactly the same at any one time. The same is true for each prospect you meet and each deal you work. Expect change, that’s true control.

How To Recognize the Elephant in the Room #412

How To Recognize the Elephant in the Room #412

Have you ever been ghosted by a prospect? Ever wondered why they’ve disappeared and didn’t have the good manners to tell you why? Have you ever considered that maybe it’s not them, but it’s you, that it’s your fault because you failed to address their concerns or, you didn’t give them the impression they could trust you. In this week’s episode we talk about the elephant in the room, the big issues that sales people are afraid to bring up with hopes it will just go away, but it won’t!

Today’s Chapter –   Elephant In The Room

At the first scent of objection
The fool avoids it
Deluding themselves the deal is won.
Like rotten wood covered with new paint
The sale soon crumbles when bearing weight.

Better to shine a bright light on issues
Addressing them as best able
Accepting the truth for what it is.

A destination can be reached by more than one path.
Seek the truth and let the sale be.

Today’s Story

During the sales call the buyer had 100 questions to ask Chris. One question was particularly vexing for Chris. It concerned a service that Chris’s company didn’t provide. It was all Chris could do to avoid answering the question outright. After getting back to the office, Chris was certain the deal was dead and had no idea how the situation could be avoided.

“When you get into this situation deal with it head on”, said Pat, always inquire “is this service important to your business? How come?”

Listen, many times you’re going to find the buyer is just curious, the missing service they are asking about isn’t a deal breaker. But sometimes it is. But avoiding the question does no one any good. It’s better to know now than chase them for the next three months trying to get another meeting scheduled.

Always deal with the elephant in the room when your with the buyer. If you don’t it will be near impossible to restart the conversation”

Take Action Quote

I’m reminded of the of the quote from the late professor Randy Pausch from Carnegie Mellon who said “if there is an elephant in the room, introduce him.”

That’s great advice for any seller who thinks that they can avoid an objection by avoiding the conversation. You won’t!. Sooner….. is better than later. If you don’t you’ll get ghosted!

How To Find The Tao Te Ching of Sales

A Novel Approach for B2B Sales with Wayne Moloney #411

A Novel Approach for B2B Sales with Wayne Moloney #411

What’s the best way to teach the drama, politics, and egos that challenge B2B sales? How about some fiction?  In this episode Wayne Moloney shares a novel approach for teaching B2B sales. He does this by coauthoring an actual novel, titled the Wentworth Prospect, a Novel Guide to B2B Sales.   In this drama, the book shares a tale of a very believable B2B enterprise sales challenge that is buffeted by fear, petty behavior and courage. Wayne and I talk about the characters and the books sales framework called  EDVANCE.

Bad Politics for Both Buyers and B2B Sellers

The story focuses on the career of Sue Novak, a new sales consultant who is thrust into a challenging deal.   Her struggle is filled with adversaries, corporate intrigue, power-plays and hidden agendas.

Sue is over her head yet she has an edge: a mysterious journal written by her dead mentor Doug. The journal reveals a radical new sales framework named EDVANCE. Sue uses the framework to navigate the Wentworth organization and facilitates the prospect to reveal to themselves the true issues  in the organization, as well as a prospective solution.

EDVANCE B2B Sales Framework

The book speaks at length about the EDVANCE B2B sales framework. It emphasizes the need for understanding stakeholder archetypes, mapping the stakeholders, identifying their motivations and understanding their levels of influence. It believes in the necessity of buyer consensus by getting the sellers involved early in the buyer’s journey. It speaks of how sellers need to build a personal brand and use that capital to help customers pick solutions they need vs those they want. The end goal is to help buyers “sell themselves” on the sellers solutions.

Compassionate Listening of Thich Nhat Hanh #410

Compassionate Listening of Thich Nhat Hanh #410

I would like to set aside the Tao Te Ching of Sales this week and speak about the passing of someone who has deeply influenced me. On January 22nd, Thich Nhat Hanh the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk and peace activists passed away in Hue Vietnam. He was 95 years old.

Thich Nhat Hanh or Thay,  as his students call him, Thay which means teacher,  has been one of the most influential spiritual leaders of our time. He is the author of over a 100 books regarding mindfulness, spirituality, interbeing and awareness. He is  the main inspiration for engaged Buddhism, which seeks to  apply the Buddhist  ethics on contemporary situations of social, political, environmental and economic suffering, and injustice.

I first started reading Thich Nhat Hanh’s books late in the 90s and found inspiration for my work and  yes when selling.

His Teaching of Compassionate Listening

In 2013 Oprah Winfrey interviewed Thich Nhat Hanh and one insight he shared applies directly to business and sales. I’ve shared this before that I see selling has a helping profession. As sellers it is our responsibility to relieve the suffering of our customers. Each prospect you meet has some unfulfilled need or desire that greatly pains the and their organizations. The way master sellers can assuage this suffering is to listen. Only after listening can we know if we can help. In the interview. Thay said this …

“Deep listening is the kind of listening that can help relieve the suffering of another person. You can call it compassionate listening. You listen with only one purpose: to help him or her to empty his heart. Even if he says things that are full of wrong perceptions, full of bitterness, you are still capable of continuing to listen with compassion. Because you know that listening like that, you give that person a chance to suffer less. If you want to help him to correct his perception, you wait for another time. For now, you don’t interrupt. You don’t argue. If you do, he loses his chance. You just listen with compassion and help him to suffer less. One hour like that can bring transformation and healing.”

Business and Sales Compassionate Listening

I’m certain this isn’t the first time that you heard that listening is important. Management will give lip service to good listening but more often that not they invest more energy into accelerating the script and driving to close. Sadly, too often listening is  seen as a soft skill.

“Soft” implies it’s lesser than, something minor, less important than computer literacy, scientific understanding, academic proficiency, mathematical prowess, or analytical skills. All of these are important; they are vital and worthy skills to possess.

Compassionate Listening is deeply underrated as a skill.  Yet, we would say that listening is the most important skill we need to have. The hard sciences previously mentioned could not have been learned from talking, but listening.

Listening needs to be at the top of the list of skills to master and model if we want to have more authentic relationships and more impactful connections.

Listening is at the core of successful relationships and cannot be short-changed if we want our relationships – professional and personal – to be meaningful and satisfying.

Listening well with intention, being actively present with one another, suspending judgments, dispensing with platitudes, pitching products and respecting the inherent human worth of those to whom we listen is hard work.

Listening is not easy, if so everyone would be doing it. The lack of listening and discovering commonalities, or as Thay would say interbeing, is the fundamental root of the break down of our society when it comes to political discussion. Listen only goes so far to see if the other person is on our team or not. But we can be better. We need to be better.

Overcoming the Fear and Rejection of Sales

Beyond listening there is the struggle of call reluctance and opportunity for rejection. Thich Naht Hanh once said.

“Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones.”

He taught me to relax, let go and accept the world as it is.

A Message for Technologists

In 2013, he spoke at Google’s headquarters in Silicon Valley, bringing his message of quiet contemplation to the forefront of the high-energy digital age.

“We have the feeling that we are overwhelmed by information,. We don’t need that much information.

Do not try to find the solution with your thinking mind. Nonthinking is the secret of success. And that is why the time when we are not working, that time can be very productive, if we know how to focus on the moment.”

Benefits, the Only Things Buyers Care About #409

Benefits, the Only Things Buyers Care About #409

Most of what we sell either solves a problem or fulfills a desire. Problems and desires are first and foremost in the buyers mind. In most cases, buyers could care less how they get there, they just want to get there. The solution is important, but what matters is results. In this episode we delve into the conundrum of features vs benefits, the only thing buyers really care about.

Today’s Chapter –   Benefits

Know the features
Yet focus on benefits.
What the buyer values,
exceeds detailed minutia.
Listen for goals, needs and problems
Repressing lofty orations on specifications.

Speak to the why and the sale will advance

Today’s  Story

Chris was a nerd at heart and excited to talk about all the bells and whistles the newly launched product contained. Chris had studied everything written about the product. Not a single spec sheet had been forgotten. But Pat could hear that the buyer was getting impatient on the Zoom call.

Pat texted Chris,

“Buyers don’t care about features,
 just want problems solved,
start walk through benefits list,
ask if they agree”.

Seeing the text, Chris immediately pivoted the conversation and shared how the product was faster, more productive, raised revenue and lowered errors. Immediately the buyers perked up.

Pat texted again “Great course correction, go get’m tiger”.

Take Action Quote

Supposedly Professor Theodore Levitt: said “People don’t want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole!”

Too often sellers get pumped about all the cool features that differentiate their product from the competition when in reality buyers just want their problems solved and desires come true. Buyers who lead with the benefit will find more success.  For the most part, all buyers really care about is results.
