How To Podcast

How To Podcast

In the fall of 2013 Denise and I came up with the name “Sales Babble”.  It was the culmination of two things: my desire to teach selling and go beyond blogging.  I’ve always been a fan of radio and avid listener to podcasts.  I became intrigued with idea of producing a show that sounded great yet more importantly, provided entertaining sales wisdom. I wanted to produce a podcast that talked about selling secrets for non-sellers.

In the beginning didn’t know how to podcast.  It was a puzzle But after much research, trial,  and error I was able to create my first pilot episode (listen here). Then I produced another episode and another and here I am, still banging away and publishing new episodes every Tuesday morning at 3 AM Central time.

Now it’s time to give back.

Why Podcast

I would like to share a few notes on podcasting for those of you interested in taking the plunge.  But before I do I have some questions:

  • Why do you want to make a podcast?
  • Are you a freelancer?
  • A business?
  • A marketing manager?
  • A business development director?
  • A founder or consultant?
  • Do you think podcasting as a great way to build authority, and provide your customers and target audience with valuable and entertaining content?

For me,  podcasting is the best way to build my personal  brand and generate new leads. Podcasting Sales Babble has been extremely  rewarding.   I love  helping the listeners become the very best seller they can be. Hearing their success brings value to the hard work of producing a podcast. Also I’ve been able to transfer that loyalty to Habanero Media.

And by the way it is hard work.

As you answer those questions and see clearly the exciting possibility in podcasting I’m pumped to help you get started.

How To Podcast Overview

I’ve attached a slide deck of a talk I first gave at the the Fox.Build makerspace.  It is the first of a three part series. It covers:

  • My podcast story
  • Podcast definition
  • Different kinds of podcasts
  • Mechanics of producing a podcast
  • Equipment
  • Marketing

If you have any questions, just ask.

Audio Recording Process

This is the handout I’ve shared at an audio recording class at Fox.Build. This is the second of a three part series. It walks through the hardware in the media studio, the software I used to record and steps to create a quality sounding podcast.

Studio Hardware Setup

If you haven’t already looked,  I have photos of the Sales Babble podcast studio posted here. On that page are directions and explanations of the hardware configuration as well as a Youtube video demo of the setup.

I’ve built a media center at Fox.Build using very similar hardware. Photos of the setup can be found here.

This is a photo of the mobile podcasting setup. This is the same setup I brought to Asia when living the digital nomad life.

Audacity Training

The last of the three part series is contains Audacity training. I will use the Sales Babble podcast as an example of how I produce the show. When that course is complete the links will be post here.

Links

I’m a big fan of Libsyn. All of the Sales Babble episodes are housed in Libsyn media servers. The cost is very nominal.

I use Audacity for audio editing. It’s free.
