In Fall 2002 I was laid off from Bell Labs/Lucent  where I had worked for 23 years. The “Internet Bubble” had burst and I needed to find another position. And fast.   I was a technology manager and out-of-date software developer. NOBODY was hiring.

I started looking for a job and in a few months I was offered a “sales” job for a software start-up. This was the winter of 2003. It only paid commission and I was out of my comfort zone. I had no training and the company had no marketing services for getting leads. I was the lone sales guy. And a newbie too.

Not good.

I knew the only way I was going to make this work was to study sales. So I did what I’ve always done. I bought a bunch of books. For the most part they didn’t tell me what I needed to know. In my zeal to be successful,  I became the classic “pushy” salesman. Not only did I hate it, people wouldn’t buy from me. I couldn’t get an appointment.  Time was running out.

Then I figured it out.

Eventually it dawned on me that if you took the  attitude “I’m here to help”, people would warm up to you. I started having open conversations to see if I could help.  People started to share their needs and desires. This new mindset  completely changed how I interacted with them.This realization didn’t come quickly. It took a while to refine it.

It worked.

It took a couple years, but eventually  I had more leads than I could work. We needed more help.  I was promoted to Vice President of Sales and hired a team of sales reps. And to my surprise I  was teaching sales to my new staff. What a turnabout for a former software guy.

It was incredible!
